“There’s gold in them thar hills!”
by Ed Marlowe ~ April 27th, 2008.Metallic oxides are an indication of cost in stained glass. Gold and selenium oxides produce reds, pinks and cranberry colors. These are warm colors as well as yellow which is produced with cadmium and sometimes uranium for a flourescent tone. Orange is produced with silver oxides. All of these warm colors are higher in cost because of the precious metals used in the process. Cool colors such as blue which is produced with cobalt, nickle and other oxides as well as green which is produced with chromium and iron oxides utilize metals which are not as precious, thus are less expenvie. Also less expenive metals are manganese which produces amethyst, copper which produces tourquoise, sulpher and carbon which produce amber, and iron which produces a variety of blue-greens and emerald greens. Iridescents are the result of a super-heated layering process utilizing titanium dioxide (silver) and iron oxides which lend a fiery appearance in the final product. These iridescent finishes are at a premium because of the complex process involved, but the effect is incredible. You must stop in to our studio for a tour of the wide range of stained glass available. Thanks for visiting…please check back later.
